(2008 Peacock Family Scholarship Awardee, 3rd Place)
A College Experience
By: Daphne Towns, College Student, University of West Georgia, Carrollton, GA.
I was the recipient of the 3rd place award
at the Peacock Family Reunion Scholarship in 2008. I am coming up on my 5th year in college at the University of West
Georgia in Carrollton, Ga. I am majoring in Graphic Design. The college experience for me has been a rocky one.
I have changed majors twice and have steadily been working toward my ultimate goal, graduating college. Many comment
on the amount of time it is taking me but I believe it is the end result of graduation that matters the most. College brings a lot of distractions: parties, the opposite sex, and new found freedom.
All of these things can knock someone off their path but if you keep in mind the main goal of college which is an education
then all those things will not be of importance. I believe you should partake in them but only in moderation and only
when all your work and other things dealing with your education are done. The money I won last year helped me buy the
many art supplies that were needed for my classes. It helped me out a great deal. I was very fortunate to win
this award. I thank the panel for giving me the opportunity.
A COLLEGE OUTCOME
My name is Daphne Towns and I was one of the recipients of the
Peacock Family Reunion Scholarship in 2008. After graduating with my Bachelor's degree from the University of West Georgia
in 2011, I continued to pursue my education and started my Master's program online at the University of Phoenix. I graduated
with my Master's degree in Secondary Education with a concentration in English in October 2015. Soon after graduation,
I was offered a Language Arts teacher position at Grayson High School, located within a suburb of metro Atlanta. Since
then, I have been living out a goal I set for myself years ago. Receiving the scholarship not only helped further my
education, but also helped further my life. I am in a position I have wanted to be for quite some time and I only hope
to keep going. If time permits, I wish to pursue a 3rd degree in Education, my Specialist's degree. So again,
I thank everyone involved for the opportunity in furthering a dream.
